Our Covenant
We are a welcoming, inclusive, progressive community of spiritual seekers of all ages. We gather to nourish our souls, reflect on the big questions, steadfastly support each other through hard times, and joyfully celebrate life.
We commit to living our principles by treating each other and the greater community with genuine loving kindness, by listening intently, and by speaking our truth with compassion.
We are guided by our commitment to the Earth and all of its inhabitants. Through our service, we work to transform the world into a place of unity, peace, and justice.
We invite people who:
- are looking for a religious community in which to seek spiritual growth;
- are eager to consider life's questions with others who don't always have an answer but are questing;
- would like the fellowship of others for celebrating life's passages, for worship, for life time learning and for mutual support;
- want their family to gain knowledge and appreciation of universal values and diverse religious beliefs;
- recognize and affirm personal freedom and human dignity and want to be with others who seek to preserve these core beliefs.
UUSB’s History as a Welcoming Congregation
It’s important to our congregation that all who join us in worship and community activities feel welcomed and accepted regardless of racial and sexual identities, backgrounds, and experiences. In 2004, The Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor began a comprehensive process to officially receive the designation as a Welcoming Congregation by the Unitarian Universalist Association. As part of this practice, UUSB underwent an exploration process using UUA guidelines to ensure that our services, education, congregation life, and community outreach were inclusive, affirming, and unbiased. A Welcoming Congregation committee directed thorough review of bylaws, current programming, messaging, and conducted workshops and discussion groups over the course of a 15-month period. In May of 2006, the church was pleased to be given the official designation as a Welcoming Congregation by the UUA.
